Saudi skipper lands Lorient trial
JEDDAH – Saudi Arabia and Al Ahli Jeddah skipper Hussain Abdulghani has travelled to France for a four-day trial and medical with Ligue 1 side FC Lorient.
Speaking to Al Watan newspaper, Al Ahli President Ahmed Al Marzouqi said that terms will be discussed after the outcome of the trial and only if the 2002 French Cup winners meet their valuation of the goal-scoring left winger.
"If Al Ahli can reach an agreement with the French club that is fitting for a player of Abdulghani's status then a representative from Lorient will arrive in Jeddah to complete the move," Al Marzouqi said on Sunday.
Should a deal go through then Adulghani will be the first Saudi Arabian player to join a club in Europe since Sami Al Jaber had a brief spell with English side Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2000.
Abdulghani is a key fixture in the Saudi Arabia squad that has already booked its ticket for next year’s AFC Asian Cup finals that will be co-hosted by Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
If the deal does go through with Lorient, who a currently under the helm of former Al Gharafa coach Christian Gourcuff, it will make Abdulghani only the second member of the current Saudi national team to play outside of the Kingdom.
Fellow defender and former Al Ahli team-mate Naif Al Qadhi is currently on loan with Qatar outfit Al Rayyan.
Saudi Arabia are next in action on October 11 when they host Yemen in Jeddah in the penultimate round of Group A qualifiers.
